Changing vs Stopping Habits – Monday Memo 044

Many people struggle with changing habits or stopping habits altogether. While these two approaches may seem similar, there is a powerful mindset shift that can make a significant difference in achieving your goals.

The approach of stopping a habit often involves focusing on deprivation and loss, leading to feelings of resistance and frustration. On the other hand, changing a habit involves a positive and proactive mindset. Instead of giving up something, you are focusing on creating something new and more beneficial in your life.

By focusing on changing habits, you are shifting your attention to what you want to add to your life, rather than what you want to take away. This can help you feel more motivated and empowered, as you are actively working towards something positive rather than simply avoiding something negative.

It’s important to recognize that changing a habit can be a more gradual process than simply stopping a habit. It takes time, effort, and commitment to establish new behaviours and patterns. However, by focusing on small, incremental changes and celebrating each step of progress, you can build momentum and create long-lasting change.

Steps to change a habit:

  1. Identify the habit you want to change and why you want to change it.
  2. Determine what positive behaviour you want to establish in place of the old habit.
  3. Start small and set achievable goals, focusing on one step at a time.
  4. Track your progress and celebrate your successes along the way.
  5. Surround yourself with supportive people and resources to help you stay on track.

Thought for the Week:
“The secret of change is to focus all of your energy, not on fighting the old, but on building the new.”

– Socrates

Changing habits can be a challenging process, but by shifting your mindset from stopping to changing, you can create a more positive and empowering experience. By focusing on the benefits of the new habit, setting achievable goals, and celebrating your progress, you can make real and lasting change in your life.
