Own It, Get It Done – Monday Memo 012

There are so many hacks and tricks out there of how to achieve anything. All you have to do is Google it, we all want our lives a certain way so we look for the quickest possible way to get there. Here is the downfall just like we spoke about in the last Monday Memo – Feel Like You Are Stuck In Place?, we end up becoming outcome focused instead of process focused.

When we try to use a hack to get to where we want to be we can become frustrated when it doesn’t play out as easy as what it was made out to be to achieve. 

How many times have we tried a new “diet” or “training programme” with the promise of getting the results we wanted within 12 weeks or 30 days or 7 days (I have seen it) this is great for the person selling it but doesn’t really help us, because we have just set ourselves up to fail if we do not have true buy in to our goal.

Think about it, when we truly want something bad enough we make it happen. We move things, we change plans, we shift money around and we just make it happen, but when it comes to something we do not have true commitment to then we allow things to be moved over top of them, we look for excuses, we opt out of actually getting it done, usually because it is hard work and usually because we don’t really care if it happens enough.

So, how do we get better at taking ownership, here are 5 steps to taking ownership:

DECIDE IT IS TIME – Usually you don’t take any action until you hit rock bottom and you have no other choice. But you have the power to change your situation at any time. So, don’t wait until next year, next month or next week… just start now!

DRAW A LINE IN THE SAND – Who cares what was in the past, you are never going to move forward and take full ownership of yourself if you are constantly looking backwards at what was. Focus on now and plan for the future. Don’t let your past become an excuse.

MAKE A PLAN – Where do you truly want to be? Most people can tell you what they don’t like about the situation they are in, but they cannot tell you how they want it to look. If you cannot see the goal, how can you ever achieve it? Think big picture and be clear on the end result, then break it down into baby steps.

TAKE SMALL DAILY STEPS – Don’t try and bite the whole thing of and chew for dear life. It won’t work. Start with small changes, actions and goals, and crush each one until you become a true goal crushing machine. Like any skill, this will take practice, so get some small wins first.

BE CONSISTENT AND PATIENT – Consistency trumps intensity every time, there is no point going at change like a raging bull only for you to fall off the wagon three days later. Bring it down a couple of notches and stay consistent. Stop expecting miracles overnight this shit will take time!

When we can truly understand that everything in our lives is ours to own, then we can start to make things happen because we will stop trying to find excuses that will validate our reasons for not taking what we want by the horns and making it  happen.

True Personal Ownership is the most powerful skill that we can master, once we understand it and put it to use in every situation we are in the driver’s seat of our life and no longer just passengers allowing whatever happens to just happen.
