We all have rules in our life that we will not break no matter what. Usually these have come from a belief that has been passed on from our parents, peer group, someone else that we look up to or from something we have learned or discovered.
Then what we do is lock in a belief and a non-negotiable rule that we will not waiver with. Sometimes these become outdated and we forget why we get so defensive when someone challenges this.
Great news! We can rewrite the rule book for ourselves.
There are some of these “rules” that hinder us now that really helped us get to where we are now, but our current thinking got us to this current reality and to keep moving and growing we need to rewrite those rules.
It is a really simple exercise to do, we just take a piece of paper, open a new document on our pc or create a new note on our phones.
Then write down what our top 10 non-negotiable rules/ standards are.
It helps to think about what is truly important to us, our health, our career, our family, our friends, etc. Whatever it is we need to make a rule that is non-negotiable to us.
For example:
- Workout 30 mins 5 days/ week
- Catch up with a group of friends every second week
- Stretch for 20 mins everyday
- Eat clean 6 out of 7 days
- Respond to emails within 24 hours
- Etc
Once we have our list of non-negotiables, our new rule book, this is where the work begins!
It is easy to have these written down but so much harder to live in to them daily. It takes practice and sometimes it doesn’t always work out but when we break a rule we have 2 options. We can give up and throw them all away or we can double down on it and really work to ensure it becomes a non-negotiable.
Remember there is a reason why something will make it to our rule book. We do not just write something down for fun, we are setting the standards for ourselves, so we can be the best version of ourselves and achieve the things we want to achieve.
This can be extremely valuable when we have a lot going on in life and need a tool for prioritising what is truly important.
If we do not set our rules and standards, then we open ourselves up to anyone else that wants to set them for us!
