Now is the Time to Stop & Reflect! – Monday Memo 001

Well firstly, I hope at this time you and your loved ones are safe and strong.

What a crazy time to be alive, with all that is happening with Covid-19, people are feeling uncertain, lost or just stuck. This is the time when we need to be even more resilient and really test our readiness to adapt.

I know it’s been a while! I have been working away on heaps of cool projects (I will fill you in later) and haven’t made email and social media a priority BUT, with all the craziness goin’ on in the world at the moment I needed to touch base and reconnect to make sure you are ready and resilient for everything that is goin’ on now and what is to come.

Even though it doesn’t feel like this is a perfect time to take a breath reflect, acknowledge and plan.

This is a simple process but an extremely effective tool to use to drive the focus and success of our days, weeks, months and years, you can even use it in our current situation. If we take the time to do this it will become a strong habit to understand how we are doing and how we can improve our overall performance.

Let me share some more.

Reflect: Sometimes we get so caught up in what is coming next that we never stop and consider what we have accomplished, what we did well, what we didn’t do well, where we failed, where we succeeded and what we can take away as we continue forward. We never want to spend too long looking backwards (that’s how you hurt your neck lol) but we need to use our past to help better our future.

Acknowledge: When we are so focused on getting to the end goal, that it is too easy just to move straight onto the next thing once we achieve our goal. It is important to acknowledge the “wins” and our “failures” as well. Reframing where we have gone wrong is important for growth. We must understand how we can avoid repeating that failure and so acknowledging these as learning experiences help us eliminate it from happening again.

Plan: Prior planning prevents poor performance! How can we use what we have just experienced good, bad or otherwise to create a better future moving forward? Making a plan can eliminate or minimise the impact of the same mistakes creeping in. Making a plan can give us the focus to elevate us to new heights in our careers and our personal lives. If we do not have a plan before we attack something then how can we expect any kind of favourable outcome?

This process is simple, and quick and the more we do it the better we become at it. So have a go and see how it works, setting this up as daily practice will help you crush goals and take more control of your days.

How I do it:

I have a time blocked out in my calendar for 10 mins every day, this is where I reflect on my day and set up a plan for the next day, this gives me an opportunity to clear my head by reflecting on what really happened, then acknowledge the day by getting an understanding about where I won and where I can grow and then I use that to plan how I will attack the next day. I use Sunday night as my weekly Reflect & Reset time, where I can plan my week and I do this quarterly and yearly as well.

It sounds like a lot, but it becomes a very quick part of the goal setting process once we work at it.

So, every now and then take a breath and REFLECT, ACKNOWLEDGE and PLAN this will keep you aligned with the outcomes you truly want.
